Mild and very windy

” I say dear, where has all the snow gone?”Well it was mild and very windy today but luckily we only had light rain in the area so not too much damage has been done to the remaining snow. The surface layers have started to soften up but as it is forecast to turn colder this evening that process will be reversed. By morning the remaining snow should be very firm again.
We have been forecast some fresh snow but at the moment this is expected to be isolated snow showers with the small risk of a longer spell of snow. The best thing to do is to watch the evening weather forecasts and they will give the latest information on how much snow the area will receive. The winds are expected to be very strong – 60 mph at 1000 metres so if we do have some snow it will drift and new accumulations will form rapidly in very sheltered locations. It will be least stable where old snow is already present as this will provide a firm base layer for the new snow to slide on. So gully exits and the top of scarp slopes are the ones to watch if you come across a significant amount of fresh snow.
