Rising Freezing Level

2nd January 2024

Snowfall early this morning,  turned to rain below 1000 metres before midday, with the freezing level rising up to around 1100 metres. Avalanche activity was heard by two separate parties during the morning in Lochnagar, with cornice collapse being the probable suspect in both cases. It wasn’t possible to verify this as the visibility was non-existent. We will hopefully get back into the corrie soon to check out the debris.

Staying relatively mild tomorrow with the freezing level eventually lowering to around 1050 metres. While consolidation will continue, wet snow instabilities will persist on the steepest terrain. Any remaining cornices will continue to be a threat to the slopes below.

Limited photography options today with no viz and rain on the lens…

This crack propagated under body weight with the shovel being placed in the photo for scale

Poor viz but small unstable cornices have formed.

It felt quite raw in the wind with rain falling…but not if you found yourself a wee shelter

Rain on lens – Very poor visibility today…
