Slow thaw..

12th March 2024

It was still icy above 900 metres today but below this altitude the snow had softened. The freezing level rose to about 950 metres by midday and it was just about possible to punch through the icy crust that has encased everything underfoot.

The freezing level is due to rise up and over the summits this evening with some rain forecast for most of the night. Cornice collapse and minor surface instability on steep terrain will be an overnight issue. Turning cooler just after daybreak with the old snow above 950 metres slowly starting to firm up.

The weather looks very unsettled for the rest of the week with a variable freezing level, precipitation amounts and winds.

Falling ice a hazard today! All this fell off the uplift infrastructure…

No visibility again today. Thick cloud above 700m.

Firm, icy crust everywhere above 900m today – even 4 paw claws were struggling…
