Last of the arctic cold?

18th January 2024

After some overnight snow it was a bright morning followed by further snow showers again in the afternoon. Cold again in the wind but many of you will have seen a change in the weather patterns over these next days. Slow going on the tracks today, progress on snow covered ice is always a hit and miss affair!

Currently areas of deep snow that have developed over a hard base demonstrate poor stability. Tomorrow (Friday) will be a challenging day with plenty of wind, snow and rain in the weather forecast. Many area of snow are expected to become increasingly unstable with this forecast.

Exposed terrain is scoured. Old snow very icy. Meall Choire na Saobhiadhe in the background.

Deep drifts around any sheltered features. The peak of Culardoch (900m) in the background looking white.
