Cold and windy.

17th January 2024

Great views this morning but bitterly cold in the wind. Glenshee snow gates were initially closed due to overnight snow with drifting. Unstable deposits have developed in lee locations, 2 small natural/cornice triggered avalanches were noted.

Rogue with a view. Wind sheltered terrain is holding deep unstable snow, elsewhere becoming scoured.

Stunning views this morning to the main Cairngorms.

Skiers skinning to the top of Glas Maol. Evidence of older avalanches behind on the West Wall.

Very icy where exposed to the strong winds. Stripped snow being deposited in lee locations.

Raised Mountain Hare tracks. The hare had compressed the snow, then the wind removed the softer snow leaving footprints across the slope.

Higher areas were exposed to strong winds but these generally eased during the afternoon.

Ski tourers, snowshoers and walkers out today. Here a walker battles into the cold wind.

Clouds building late morning.

Some great ski descents if you chose well!
