The Shortest Day

21st December 2022

The Shortest Day – from now on the day light hours will slowly start increasing  – Thankfully…

Not a particularly inspiring day on the hill with strong winds and light precipitation. This fell as very light snow above 800 metres this morning and then above 900 metres this afternoon, as the freezing level rose to around 1000 metres.

The cover on open hillsides is very patchy but ice still remains on some paths. In wind sheltered locations, such as burn lines, deeper snow does exist.

Shallow new windslab is present but accumulations have yet to achieve a significant depth or distribution.

No precipitation and light winds forecast for tomorrow so it should be a bit more pleasant…

Very patchy snow cover on open hillsides.

Looking up towards the West aspect of Lochnagar in the clouds

Wind sheltered locations, like this burn line, are still holding deeper accumulations of snow.

Plenty of water still running off the lower hills into the Garbh Allt waterfalls
