Lochnagar.

10th December 2021

It was a cold day today with a high wind chill in the strong winds. We wandered up from Gelder Shiel towards the West Ridge, quite slow going at times, I’d allow more time than expected if your planning a route on foot. Skiers will have challenges as well but there’s plenty to go at.

Lots of soft snow lower down, breakable crust above 800 metres.

Spot the climbers (?) about to enter the boulders on the way to the crags.

Good snow cover where sheltered from the winds. It seemed to support Sam’s weight but not mine. Perhaps I had a heavier rucksack.

Boulder fields are filling in nicely. A few teams were in today.

Two teams heading for Central Butress and Shadow A.
