Dreich…

31st January 2017

Low cloud into the glens, no viz, strong wind and drizzle – Dreich covers it in one word. The superficial snow cover at lower altitudes is thawing rapidly but at higher elevations the deeper deposits are holding onto some drier snow at the moment.

Braemar Mountain Rescue Team were out on a search for the majority of last night with Police Scotland, Aberdeen and Tayside MRTs, and members reported becoming encased in ice with jackets frozen solid and rucksack buckles becoming inoperable as they developed a solid glaze of ice over them – just like the ski fences in the photo. (Sorry only one photo today – very low cloud base and no visibility on the hills).

Last nights driven rain froze on contact with the ski fences
