Lochnagar

20th February 2014

Lochnagar today, rain stopped and it started cooling down.
Sizeable cornices are all round the Corrie. It’ll need another thaw or wind/snow for more to collapse. It will be a bit of a lottery in those conditions.
Wet layers in the snowpack, previously ice they were not quite slush yet.

Two avalanches occurred while I was there. The right one had 2.5 metre blocks in it.
What’s odd about this? The rescue box, the gear shelter boulder and the cairn with avalanche probes attached has all been buried. You will NOT be able to access this in the event of emergency.
There were sluffs and instabilities on many steep slopes, including this on at low level.
Another wade through the river, not my favourite way to finish the day.
