Creag a’ Ghlas-Uillt

8th March 2012

Looking towards Broad Cairn from the path leading towards Lochnagar from Glas-allt-Shiel on Loch Muick. Most of the snow that fell last night has melted rapidly except where it has fallen onto existing neve or is shaded from the sun.
The picture below was taken on a steep sheltered North-East aspect. Windblown snow had accumulated to depths of 30cms over neve. The windslab was poorly bonded; shooting cracks extending from footprints and breaking off in chunks.

The photo below was at the profile site. An easy Tap Test failure of the surface windslab on graupel overlying the old neve. With a widely held public perception that there is “no snow” it is worth remembering that hazards due to instabilities in the limited snowpack still exist for those that venture onto the little snow we have.
