Nice day for mountain travel and heather burning

29th March 2011

Good cover remains for ski touring although patches of snow have to be linked together to gain the higher ground. Today the gamekeepers were out burning aged heather . This benefits humans and wildlife alike. For us hill walkers it reduces the amount of long heather to struggle through and the new heather shoots provide good nourishment for animals and birds. Spring conditions with the remaining long banks of snow would stop a wild fire in the unlikely event that the heather burners lose control of their fires.
