Avalanche hunting (spring)

5th April 2010

We wanted to get a close up photo of the large ground release avalanche that was reported this weekend. This was as close (we think) as we got. We’ll try again tomorrow.
Ground release avalanches due to glide are another enigma of the avalanche phenomena. Certainly the timing is difficult to predict. Explosives have been used with only occasional success. They certainly have potential to catch the unlucky and cause major damage.
