Staying Cold

13th January 2009

It’s going to stay cold for the next 24hr period but there is no snow forecast tonight or tomorrow. There is a hint of snow arriving on Wednesday evening – so keep your eyes on the weather forecasts.
It looks like Wednesday will be a reasonable day on the hills with fairly light winds and a 400 metre freezing level forecast. The surface layers of the old snow are really starting to firm up so watch yourselves there. The runouts are pretty serious at the moment. The snow beneath the surface layers is still soft in places so bear that in mind if you are using snow belays. The situation will improve all the time though with the continued cold temperatures. The easier gullies may be a bit leaner than they were but they should still provide a bit of entertainment!
The snow cover is very patchy on the White Mounth hills now. Much larger areas exist on the high hills of the main Cairngorm Plateau.
