Weather watching

20th January 2008

Snow cover from Glas Maol to Tolmount
Another reasonable day on the hills today. There was the odd light snow shower and a fresh wind but the visibility was fairly good. The snow has a crust on it, which is weight bearing in places and breakable in others. Generally if you are on skis you will stay on the surface but it feels quite firm. There is some windslab around in sheltered locations but it is fairly localised.
You’ll need to watch the latest weather forecasts to get an up date on the exact track of the next developing low. We have been given a “no snow” forecast but with the possibility that the low may track further North and then there would be a small risk of some snow in the area. It’s staying cold – Minus 4 at 1000 metres so no devastating thaw just yet!
