Lochnagar

8th January 2008

Walked into Lochnagar today. The Glen Muick road has compacted snow and ice on it and won’t take much new snow to become blocked again. There is a trail of sorts broken into the col but it was still fairly hard going with a breakable crust present if you stepped off the trail.

Snow cover has improved considerably as you can see from the photos but we failed to spot any noticeable ice. I suspect a lot of clearing will be required on most routes, and a melt-freeze cycle would help but I think there is a bit of potential there. Cornices have started to develop the biggest is at the top of Right Hand Black Spout.
We were fortunate to get some pics. The weather closed in as the promised snow arrived.
Raised steps leading towards the Corrie.
