Winds and showers

21st March 2008

We have had fairly frequent and often heavy snow showers for most of the day. There has also been very strong winds which have stripped the snow off the slopes and only the most sheltered locations have managed to hang on to any of the new deposits. Where windslab has formed it is locally deep, highly layered with a mixture of crystals including quite a lot of graupel. Most areas are wind scoured with thin cover or firm old snow.
The forecast is for more of the same with possibly slightly less heavy showers and the winds are decreasing to NW 35mph on Saturday. It is staying cold with minus 6 degrees centigrade forecast at 1000 metres tomorrow.
