Serious & Sustained Winds

25th January 2025

Wind speeds last night were sustained and serious with many of us losing power during the evening. SAIS South Cairngorms has had to decamp to Ballater to get power – Thanks to BMRT!

Cairnwell weather station displaying a gust of 134mph last night.

Consequently many areas are wind scoured holding little snow. Only very sheltered locations such as gully tops, sharply defined corrie rims or steep burn lines have managed to accumulate any deeper snow. Here the snow is dry, light and poorly bonded. There are very mixed conditions underfoot with a hard icy crust in places – sometimes you break through and sometimes you’re left trying to kick through or teeter across. Eventually crampons made sense to speed the process up.

Staying cold with a little more snow forecast overnight and then potentially some more on Sunday evening.

Someone is lucky to view Lochnagar from their front room. Thanks to Julian, BMRT

Scoured exposed locations. Drifts in wind sheltered places.

Drifting continued even after the snow showers had ceased.

Snow can be seen swirling around the rim of Choire Dhirich and on Cairnwell.
