It’s complicated…

26th January 2025

We have an increasingly complicated snow stability map developing. The recent accumulations have started to consolidate but need time to complete the process and are still demonstrating a degree of instability in steeper, wind sheltered locations. Tonight there will be further snowfall, this time on SE winds, building windslab on aspects that have previously been scoured and stable. This will develop into a situation where most steeper, wind sheltered locations will contain some windslab. So caution required over the next 24 hour period.

We were heading into Lochnagar this morning but the route we use was blocked by a fallen tree and so we had to turn around and head up quite an icy A93 to the ski area. Here the cloud base sat between 600 and 700 metres. Consequently the photo opportunities were fairly slim to non-existent. Conditions underfoot remained similar to yesterday with some deeper drifts and some very icy crusts, where crampons become the most efficient method for making progress.

Wintery conditions at 900m. Chilly in the strong winds.

Poor visibility today. Mixed conditions underfoot – some wind scoured, some deeper drifts and some very icy crusts.
