Limited new snowfall

11th January 2023

Less snow than expected arrived in the area today, with many locations bare or holding patchy snow. The old snow went through another mini melt/freeze cycle last night and is now quite firm and icy. Strong winds were causing persistent drifting of deposits, so locations that were well sheltered from the wind have accumulated soft windslab in them. Caution definitely required around the tops of gullies and steep, sharply defined corrie rims. The transition from stable to unstable snow is quite abrupt and it only takes a shallow snowpack release to knock you off your feet on steep terrain. The run-outs are particularly rocky at present.

Not particularly great visibility again today  – so limited photo opportunities.

Airborn snow in the middle of the shot. Fairly persistent drifting of deposits today.

The sun occasionally pushed through the cloud…

Little snow on the West aspect of Cac Carn Beag 1155m – Winds have stripped the snow and deposited it in the Lochnagar gullies
