Blue Sky & Sunshine

4th January 2025

It was quite a lovely day on the hill today. A few banks of cloud pushed through during the morning but they cleared away fairly quickly to leave a good deal of sunshine. Mostly light winds but it was fairly chilly if you dropped into the shade and were still in the wind. The air temperature in the shade was a cool -5 degrees centigrade at 1000m. There were quite a few walkers out and about burning off those festive season calories.

There is a fair bit of water-ice lurking on the paths and tracks, just hidden by a skim of snow and waiting to catch you out… Mostly we have a very thin covering of snow from glen level, with isolated accumulations of windslab in wind sheltered locations. Distribution isn’t extensive but the cold temperatures are maintaining a slow rate of consolidation so worth avoiding at the moment.

Great to have a return to winter conditions

East face of Glas Maol, fresh accumulations on wind sheltered slopes.

Looking from Glas Maol to Cairn o’Claise – mostly thin cover. Deeper in wind sheltered places.

Localised deeper accumulations present in wind sheltered locations on E to S facing slopes.
