Storm Force Winds

27th January 2024

Super windy on the summits today with storm force winds. One of those days when you didn’t take your sack off unless you were prepared to pin it down! Really difficult walking conditions, with gusty winds, exposed ice and a thawing snowpack. Sometimes you were getting blown along the surface and other times you were falling right through it. The snow is really limited at lower elevations now and will become more so in the next 24 hour period as the freezing level once again rises above the summits. Above 900 metres is holding on well at the moment but it will be interesting to see what damage occurs overnight and during Sunday. Slightly cooler conditions expected on Monday and Tuesday.

Very windy conditions for trying to take photos today – Quite a bit of camera shake going on – actually make that whole body shake!

Looking out from Black Spout, Right Hand across to the Southern Sector

Small cornices at present. Mild conditions on Sunday may see some of them drop off.

Looking across to the Central Buttress area

Windslab at the very tops of the most wind sheltered gullies

Snow bridges are definitely suspect at the moment

Snow melt in the Glas Allt – Looking fuzzy as the water was being blown out of the burn and across the hillside
