After the thaw…..

12th December 2021

Not a bad day today – dry with moderate winds and a variable could base. Soft wet snow underfoot, improving with altitude. The freezing level was above the summits overnight and there has been a fair bit of snow loss in the past 24 hour period – The cover is fairly limited below 800 metres and thin or patchy in exposed locations or plateau areas. Still plenty of depth in wind sheltered locations. It’s due to be wet and mild again this evening but the freezing level is due to lower down to 800 metres in the early hours so eventually the snow will become firm and icy. Lots of boulders showing through at the moment – so don’t get caught out with a slip or trip….

Not great for photos today – I was either in the cloud or getting buffeted in the wind. They give the general idea though…

Looking across to Creag Leacach 987m from Meall Odhar. Note bare ground at 920m exposed location.

Coire Fionn and the West aspect of Glas Maol 1068m from Meall Odhar.

Variable cloud base required a compass at times. Thin cover on Glas Maol plateau.
