Cold temperatures have maintained a slow rate of consolidation. Deposits remain cold, dry and light with vast quantities available for redistribution. Conditions underfoot are variable with drifts of powder snow at lower elevations but with a great deal of only partially covered heather. Higher up at around the 700 metre mark the snow possesses a soft breakable crust. From around 850-900m this crust is just about weight bearing (for a small person on skis!) At this elevation there is also some firm wind shaped features.
We have been forecast moderate snowfall overnight. This on its own is not particularly significant – however the winds are going to increase to Gale Force. There will be significant redistribution of lying deposits on top of the accumulations formed by the falling snow. Deep unstable windslab will rapidly form in wind sheltered locations with fragile cornices developing.
