Windy Weekend!

9th January 2009

Snowline sitting between 800 and 900 metres above Glen Callater

Limited areas of ice still exist in Coire Kander

After a cloudy start the day eventually cleared to become quite stunning. It remained cold on the summits and the wind chill was quite significant. The snow only softened at lower levels, and remained firm on the tops. Conditions are quite lean but there was some ice in Coire Kander, and the footpaths are still covered in solid water-ice.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is quite complicated in terms of precipitation and freezing levels. The most accurate forecasts will be the ones using the most up to date information – the evening weather forecasts – so it is probably worth trying to watch one tonight. If the snow that has been forecast arrives on the given windspeed, and it is then followed by heavy rain, there will be avalanche activity in the locations mentioned in the main report – so careful route choice required. Take care out there – Have a good weekend.
Sam
