No Photos Today!
10th January 2009
Sorry folks – no photos today – It has been a bit windy on the hills. Standing up was occasionally difficult and making progress (in the direction you wanted to go!) was often impossible. It has been one of those awkward days when very little snow actually arrived during the observation period on the hills and consequently a Category 2 has been issued for the conditions seen at that time. However from mid-afternoon there has been a period of heavy precipitation that will have fallen as snow from 900 metres upwards. This will have been driven on by very strong SSW winds and consequently windslab will have developed in the locations mentioned in the main report outlook.
It is going to remain very windy throughout the next 24hr period and the freezing level is due to rise well above all summits. The outcome of this will be a period of avalanche activity as the new windslab is further destabilised by thaw conditions.
