The Corrie of Lochnagar

18th March 2026

A very benign day on the hill which allowed the opportunity to visit Lochnagar, one of our most famous mountains.  Another mild day which is making its presence felt on the existing snowpack, especially where exposed to direct sunlight.  However, at high elevations in shady spots the snowpack remains firmer, although still in a thaw cycle.  Currently in the SC area, we only have one avalanche problem and that is cornice collapse.  Although small, these probably won’t feel small if you’re in close proximity.  This problem will remain constant until the freezing level lowers once again – or until they melt.

The summit and Foxes or False coire.

Meikle Pap (980m) and Lochnagar.

The Eastern section with The Cathedral on the right.

Central Buttress through to Raeburn’s Gully.

Shadow Buttress B through to the West Buttress.

Exit slopes over the Amphitheatre area.

Overhanging cornices above the Shadow Buttresses.

Beinn a’Bhuird coires.

Nearly squashed this little chap on the way out. Very lethargic but enjoying the spring sun.
