The Upper Dee valley

17th March 2026

Another windy day, dry in the morning with rain in the afternoon especially in the thick banks of cloud.  A mild day with a high freezing level resulting in more consolidation of the most recent snow deposits which is now soft.  At higher elevations, the older snowpack still remains firm with slow surface softening.  Any small snow patches with minimal depth continue to disappear in the mild conditions.  Spring like in the glens and valley but no signs of the early frogs.

Mild conditions set to continue with light to moderate winds.

Looking West along the Upper Dee valley. Carn na Moine (755m) in the centre.

Carn Crom (890m) and Coire na Saobhaidh.

Beinn Bhrotain (1108m) in the cloud with the Caochan Roibidh burn clearly visible.

Looking East along the Upper Dee valley. The radio mask of Morrone (859m) on the left.

Beinn Bhreac (931m) and Beinn a’Bhuird lurking in the cloud behind.

Coire na Saobhaidh.

Glen Derry towards Lairig an Laoigh.
