Mild & Damp
25th February 2026
Damp and breezy this morning with the cloud base below 600 metres. Not the most inspiring of days – not surprising that most of the carparks were quiet …..or empty this morning. The snow is mainly soft and wet except for the odd patch of old ice that is starting to appear from under the thawing snow. East and South-East slopes that were exposed to the winds and had thin cover are breaking through quickly with mostly patchy cover even at 900 metres. South-West through North-West to North-East aspects above 800 metres are doing okay with quite a depth still present in wind sheltered locations. Exposed locations have thinned and snow below 800 metres is thawing fairly rapidly. Any remaining snow-bridges should be viewed as suspect, especially as the burns are starting to flow fairly quickly.
Cornice collapse was heard from the main cliffs in Lochnagar yesterday afternoon and any remaining cornices are prone to collapse. If you are moving under steep cliffs be aware that rockfall could occur as the thaw continues. It looks like there will be a brief respite on Saturday, with the freezing level lowering for a while.
