A windy Lochnagar.

24th February 2026

I thought I’d grab another ski up into the corrie today. Bit patchier lower down, more walking required but it was fine higher up. The wet snow made for an easy ski back down.

It was very windy, so finished at Lochside. Fortunately it cleared a bit so got some snaps of the crag. It’s still looking quite white in the upper sections of the crags, some decent sized cornice still in place as is a lot of ice. Given the thaw is continuing for a while yet, cornice and ice collapse will remain a significant hazard.

Corrie na Saobhaidhe, Lochnagar’s summit just about visible.

Across the Loch to the main crags. I skied across the Loch last week, not today!

The West Buttress area. The ice of West Gully on the right.

South Sector. Forsaken on the right.

Lochnagar Col. The Ladders route heading into cloud. These West facing aspects help most snow.
