Lochnagar

21st February 2026

Much faster walking into Lochnagar today but the lower track is running with water and has slush and wet snow on it. It was great to have some visibility which allowed me to take some crag shots. The Southern sector in particular is holding snow  – at least 3m at 975m today. There’s also some quite weighty cornices hanging around. However with a 2000m freezing level tonight – there might be a few less in place by tomorrow!  The good news is that the freezing level will lower to 1000m tomorrow morning – slowing the thaw that was taking place today. (I’m not going to mention Tuesday’s temperatures – they’re a bit depressing).

Large wind features present

Thawing at 975m today.

Plenty of heavy snow waiting to collapse and trigger slopes in the Southern sector
