Lochnagar.
16th February 2026
I had a ski in to Lochnagar today. It started as a bright day, but sadly clouds rolled in over the hills by lunchtime. Strong winds and snowfall followed. There is some debris around the crags, mostly from the West and Southern Sector areas. The biggest was noted over a week or so ago, but there have been other avalanches since then.
Existing snow is expected to be redistributed in NE/N gale force winds tonight and along with new snowfall instabilities will develop over more aspects on wind sheltered features.
Briefly, the cloud lifted, unsurprisingly the crags are very white. They should get quite a lot of wind on them tonight.

Hi, really appreciate your work, so thanks for that.
Can you reassure me that the two dogs are always under close control so as minimise disturbance to wildlife, principally ptarmigan and hares, during these harsh conditions.

Hi John. Yes very aware of the sensitivity of having dogs on the hill. As we work with the local estates we are mindful of their work. There are times of the season the dogs don’t come out.
