North-South Divide

4th January 2026

Due to the North-North-Westerly wind direction, we are developing a North-South divide – or more correctly a North-South-East divide. Lochnagar and the White Mounth hills haven’t received quite as much snow as the mountains north of the River Dee. However trail breaking is required, thigh deep (and greater) drifts will be encountered, unstable windslab is present – just not to the same extent as on our hills further North.

This divide will widen over the next 24 hour period as the mountains in the north of the forecast area have been forecast more snow on strong winds – so further unstable windslab accumulations will form – pushing the hazard level up for these mountains.

Snowy paths and tracks – trail breaking required
