Lochnagar

24th December 2025

Went up Lochnagar in the cloud today and was lucky enough to arrive at the summit just as the sun started to break through. After a while the whole summit plateau was in bright sunshine. Just stunning…

The snow that is left had refrozen with firm and icy surface layers. Some of the rocks were glazed with ice as well making for slippy conditions underfoot. The main cliffs have lost a lot of snow and are very patchy. Some of the easier gullies have snow in them but the ‘narrows’ in Black Spout Right Hand have broken through. Left hand finish appeared to be complete.  Over in the Southern Sector, the snow is very limited.

I had excellent views over to the main Cairngorms and conditions appear to be very similar, with snow above 950 metres on North to East aspects.

The weather forecast would suggest that there will be no major change in the next few days.
