Wintry Conditions

25th March 2026

We woke up to fresh snowfall to glen level this morning. Intermittent snow showers continued through the morning and into the afternoon. Although the showers weren’t frequent, they were locally heavy at times. Combined with the gale force winds, conditions felt a bit feisty and it was bitterly cold on exposed skin. I was the only one heading into Lochnagar and was breaking trail in many places. The snow was soft and light so conditions weren’t arduous – mid shin mostly and knee deep in places. Constant drifting taking place at 900m. The new windslab is localised but unstable – failing easily in stability tests. Steeper wind sheltered locations, such as gully tops and sharply defined corrie rims are most affected.
Drier conditions tomorrow and not so windy – so likely to be a bit more pleasant. Staying cold overnight though, so only a slow rate of consolidation. Bit of thought required when heading into steeper terrain.

Trail breaking required at 850m. Lochnagar path under fresh snow.

Heavy drifting at 900m. Rucksack covered after only a short time on the ground

Lochnagar main cliffs, tops just in the cloud.

Distant view to Lochnagar, Meikle Pap just in view on the left.
