The Winter that keeps giving…
14th March 2026
After a bright start it clouded over pretty quickly with the cloud covering the higher summits for a while. It did eventually lift but the light was a bit flat for all the skiers out enjoying the fresh snow. Most people were carrying up and then putting their skis on at around 750m depending on starting point. There were some nice turns to be had when you managed to pick a good line. The snow was softening and thawing today below 800m.
Some consolidation has taken place in the past 24 hours but yesterday’s weak layer that was situated fairly deeply in the new snow is still present with clean shears fairly easy to achieve. Some more snow is forecast tomorrow on strong winds so fresh windslab is going to form in wind sheltered locations. Wind exposed locations are scoured with firm snow-ice that requires good crampon technique on more steeply angled slopes. Slips or trips have the potential to result in fairly long, high speed falls at the moment.
