T-Shirt weather

21st March 2026

I felt distinctly over-dressed in my long sleeved base layer today as most people were wearing t-shirts (3 lads wore no shirts!) in the warm and sunny weather. Mild conditions overnight meant that the snow had soft surface layers in many locations today. The first snow patch was encountered around 850 metres with broken cover everywhere, but especially on South and West aspects. Shady North and East facing slopes already had deeper cover and are hanging on to it, with much larger areas there. Small chunks of ice were heard falling off the cliffs today.

It looks like this amazing weather is now over with more unsettled conditions heading our way for the next few days. No shorts being worn tomorrow! Normal service resumes. The freezing level is due to lower to around 1000 metres by the end of the afternoon so the highest level snow will start firming up.

Perseverance Wall, The Cathedral, Sinister Buttress in the middle of the shot. Central Buttress on the right.

Central Buttress from top of Central Gully. West Buttress in the background gets lots of sun and has little snow.

Black Spout Right Branch is now well broken at the narrows.

Lochnagar, Southern Sector

Deep snow still present on high N to E facing slopes.

Unsurprisingly given the mild conditions, large glide cracks opening up.
