Firm becoming firmer

27th February 2026

It was a mainly dry and bright day over the Southern Cairngorms apart from a very brief snow shower early afternoon. The hills North of the Dee were shrouded in cloud for much of the day so unfortunately no pictures of that part of the area.

Despite the recent thaw conditions, coverage remains good on South-West through North-West to North-East aspects above 700 metres and is extensive across the White Mounth.

The snow surface was firm today and expect it to be firmer tomorrow.

Glas Maol and Coire Fionn with a kite skier making speedy progress uphill. Most winter sports require a number of factors to come together for those exceptional days on the hill and kite skiing is no exception. Good snow cover, the ideal wind speed and direction combined with good weather and visibility made this a good day for their sport, able to make rapid progress across the White Mounth.

Carn an Tuirc and Carn of Claise. A good example of how the East through to South aspects have very little snow remaining but the South-West through North-West to North-East have much more, the result of the Easterly airflow that prevailed through much of the early part of the winter causing deep accumulations in those wind-sheltered areas.

The White Mounth with extensive snow cover. Travel was fast across this today due to the firmness of the snow. Expect it to be firm and icy tomorrow. A slip or fall could lead to a prolonged and unintentionally fast slide.
