Firm and icy

28th February 2026

The Southern Cairngorms has generally lacked visibility through much of the winter, so it was wonderful to get an appreciation for how much snow has accumulated across the area during the season, even with the recent thaw.

Most of the car parks used to access the mountains were unsurprisingly full today with plenty of people out and about enjoying the fine weather. The snowpack was firm allowing for fast travel whether on foot or skis.

All change for tomorrow with progressively milder conditions returning throughout the day and snowfall turning to rain at all elevations.

The Lairig Ghru cuts through the centre of the image. The summits of Cairn Toul, Sgòr an Lochain Uaine and Braeriach are on the lefthand side and Ben Macdui is on the right.

The summit of Cairn Gorm is the highest point on the skyline with Stob Coire Etchachan in front of it. The granite tors of Beinn Mheadoin are showing on the right.
