Trail Breaking…

7th January 2026

With heavy snowfall yesterday afternoon and further snowfall this morning, travel both on road and in the mountains has been a lot slower than usual. Today I used snow shoes to trail break and even then I went up to my thighs in places. With the cloud base in the glen and no visibility on the hills it wasn’t a great day for observations but by travelling (slowly) on foot from 400 to 900 metres it was obvious that both the snow distribution and depth have increased. Deposits remain unstable with multiple easy failures occurring within the snowpack when tested. Not much change expected tomorrow but hopefully we will have better visibility.

Deep snow from glen level

Snow shoes made life a bit easier. Easily over 1 metre of snow here.

Sun briefly tried to break through the cloud.

Instabilities persist. Multiple easy failures.
