Slow going on the hills.

23rd January 2026

Unsurprisingly it’s pretty hard going on the hills at the moment. Tends to be deep drifts or very hard ice where exposed to the winds where it was difficult to make much headway without crampons. We opted to go foot today as the visibility was so bad.  Skiing would be quite choppy and highly variable. Snowshoes would have been better option, fortunately we weren’t going too far.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will be another tricky day around the area.

Deep drifts in any wind sheltered areas. This around 700 metres.

Westerly aspects appear to have caught the deepest snow.

Despite perhaps not getting quite as much snow as we thought, new accumulations were significant. These accumulations  weren’t  here yesterday. This around 900 metres.

A look in the snow identified a significant weak layer.
