Lochnagar.

2nd January 2026

With a lot of the local snow gates closed today it wasn’t a surprise that Lochnagar was very quiet today. We only saw one set of prints, probably from the bothy.

Overall it felt a ‘calmer than expected’ morning with occasional snow showers and moderate winds. It’s pretty slow going on the hill, fresh snow over water ice always makes for some comedy moments on the footpaths. I’d allow more time than you think to get around.

The hills are starting to look very Wintery, hopefully more snow to come.

Deep drifts have developed in many sheltered locations from the glens, we noted new deposits were pretty unstable where tested.  These areas are very localised, most of the terrain has a shallow covering of dry unconsolidated snow with no base.

The main crags of Lochnagar have been wind blasted for a few days. Above;Central Buttress.
