Waiting on the Weather

29th March 2025

With a forecast for snow and rain, today was about waiting for the weather to see what actually happened. The morning was mainly dry as expected, with cloudy summits and even some brighter spells. There had been an overnight dusting of new snow but really minimal amounts, only settling in wind sheltered pockets amongst the heather, rocks and being quite sticky in shallow scoops on the old snow patches. Around midday the rain started at lower elevations though was much lighter and more showery in nature than forecast. Overall, quite a dry afternoon, certainly at lower elevations. Watching the temperatures through the day the freezing level was around 1000 metres for much of the day. Winds were strong from the South-West, buffeting and making walking across the boulder covered terrain awkward. The existing patchy snow cover was firm though with care foot placements were possible on easier angle slopes, steeper slopes would be of significant consequence from a simple simple slip.

Remaining showery into this evening but then becoming drier. Amounts of new snow are not expected to be notable though into the northern boundary of the area with the higher summits and continuing strong Westerly winds, amounts may build slightly in wind sheltered pockets on Eastern aspects, coire rims, tops of gullies, however these should remain shallow and easily avoidable.
