Trail of the lonely pine…

26th March 2025

Another mild spring day with fresh South-Westerly winds.

The spring snow pack remains patchy and confined to coires and steep gullies on the higher mountains along the northern boundary of the forecast area.

Rainfall at all levels is forecast for tomorrow, the heaviest showers towards the end of the forecast period. Further reduction in snow cover is expected.

Lochan Uaine still frozen despite the temperature in the coire being +8°C. Cairn Toul in the background.

Coire Sputan Dearg, snow now confined to the steep gully lines.

The ‘Lonely Pine’ managing to survive at 790 metres. It was the only tree around with its nearest neighbour being found closer to 600 metres. The highest recorded Scots pine was at 1160 metres on the other side of the Cairngorms near Cairn Lochan.
