The Northern Boundary

19th March 2025

The good weather has allowed for observations into the Northern boundary of the South Cairngorms area. From Derry Cairngorm it was very obvious that the North Cairngorms have had the lions share of the last snowfall. There are still snow patches on the south side of Derry cairngorm and more continuous cover on Beinn a Bhuird.

(Above) The faint tracks on the right were created early morning when the snow was firm. The tracks on the left show how this southerly slope was softening as the day progressed. An overnight drop in temperatures will penetrate the snowpack further and refreeze the surface layers.
