Springy…
25th March 2025
Another beautiful spring day in the Southern Cairngorms.
Although sunny the temperatures on the summits was quite chilly due to the fresh North-Westerly winds. Very little has a change from the last few days. The remaining snow cover remains confined to the higher mountains on the Northern edge of our area. Here the snow cover mostly found in the North-West through North to North-East facing cories above 900 metres.
The strong spring sunshine, softened the surface of the snow patches that had a Southerly aspect but cooler overnight temperatures had set the shady North facing snow patches firm, a slip from one of these patches would be pretty serious as the runouts are consequential with abrupt transitions from snow to boulders.
It is remaining mild again tomorrow with the freezing level above the summits, then a band of rain is expected to develop tomorrow evening giving some more unsettled conditions.

Frog spawn in a melt water ‘puddle’ at around 1000m on Glas Maol. This spawn has been laid in clumps which means it is frog, toads lay their spawn in long strings.

Southern facing snow patch in White Brae on Glas Maol. Despite only being 10 am this snow patch had already softened in the strong spring sunshine.

The battered sign at the top of the Coire Fionn ski lift bares testament to the notorious avalanche history of this steep convex avalanche hotspot.
