Cloudy Summits

14th March 2025

The cloud stubbornly refused to shift off the summit of Lochnagar today and it felt pretty chilly in the NE wind. It definitely felt like Winter and we were on snow from just above the glen first thing. Noticeably, the strong sunlight was doing an impressive job of thawing the low lying snow during the afternoon. On the summit there is a thick covering of rime over all the rocks, combined with thin snow cover, it was a fairly white view.

There are some localised accumulations of windslab in wind sheltered locations, which are mostly avoidable. A gently rising freezing level tomorrow and some direct sunlight should help the consolidation process. A ridge of high pressure is pushing in for Saturday so hoping to get some better photos than todays.

The sun tried to break through the cloud…but failed. Black Spout Right Hand.

Plateau all white with rimed rocks and fresh snow.
