Bonus Day!

9th March 2025

Beautiful conditions today – warm for March with plus 8 degrees at 930m. Hazy sunshine and light, occasionally moderate winds. The patchy snow continues to thaw and vast areas are devoid of any.

All change overnight as the freezing level plummets – reaching 600m by tomorrow. The old snow patches will become firm and icy. For most of the area the new snow amounts will be of little significance but along our Northern boundary where the high mountains are present, slightly more snow is possible. The North Cairngorm forecast area is expecting more snow and is issuing a Moderate avalanche hazard. Obviously our areas meet and blend so it is definitely worth reading the NC report if heading into the main Cairngorm mountains from the South tomorrow. Beinn a’Bhuird also has the potential to pick up a bit more snow. We had a view into the corries this morning and there is still snow cover from the corrie rims to the corrie floor. So where fresh snow gains depth, especially if it overlies firm snow-ice, stability has the potential to become an issue.
The week ahead looks likely to stay cold with a Northerly airflow, so winter isn’t over just yet….
