Almost t-shirt weather…
7th March 2025
A sunny and warm day in the Southern Cairngorms, a good day to stop and stare.
The remaining snowpack is patchy and mostly confined to North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. These persistent snow patches are confined to terrain features such as coire back walls and gullies. The freezing level was well above the highest summits and the snow is melting and diminishing further. Despite these thaw conditions the snow patches remain quite firm, especially in shady gullies and where not exposed to the influence of the strengthening spring sun. There was evidence of recent rock fall in the coire today and there are still some patches of ice clinging to the walls of Black Spout, which will eventually loose their battle with the mild conditions and gravity.
The plateau of Lochnagar is largely clear of snow and the ground has melted and the ground is very soft. There were quite a few Ptarmigan near the summit, still in winter plumage they stood out dramatically against the greens and browns, they will looking forward to the return to wintery conditions from Monday.

Ptarmigan on the summit plateau of Lochnagar, will be more camouflaged when wintery conditions return on Monday.
