Wintry with firm snow

28th February 2025

A wintry scene above 900 metres in the coires with any snow very firm and icy. A cold day with  a good forecast expected for Saturday but with cold westerlies on the tops.

Surface hoar grains cover most fn the snow surface. They grow from ground toward the sky as supercooled vapour contacts the snow surface and solidifies – this process will continue and produce ever larger feathery snow grains. Beautiful as they are they present a fragile and unstable layer if buried by new snow?
