No Viz!

15th February 2025

It was a seriously foggy day with no viz above 700 metres. So apologies – no new photos of Lochnagar – well not any that give you a view! It was pretty chilly on the tops as well with the moisture coming out of the clouds freezing onto hats, hair, jackets etc. Despite the lack of visibility I could hear climbers in the corrie and climbing routes in the Southern Sector. The Glas Allt Shiel waterfall has thin ice on its outer edges, with the fall sitting at around 650m that bodes well for water courses at a higher altitude. There’s also quite a bit of water-ice on higher level footpaths which keeps life interesting. The old exposed snow is pretty firm as well….. “look well to each step; and from the beginning think what may be the end.” Edward Whymper.

Light to moderate snowfall and drifting forecast for tomorrow so the windslab accumulations are going to increase in depth and distribution. Unfortunately it now looks like the winds will turn Southerly from Tuesday onwards with a rise in the freezing level.

Ice just starting to form on the periphery of the Glas Allt Shiel waterfall at 650m.

Next three shots are taken around the Corrie rim of the southern sector
